Random Monday Morning

I mostly wake up late these days. I mean as late as 6.50am or 7.00 am. Speaking honestly like a good number of you the first thing I do in the morning is to check my phone or run to pee. Sometimes I even have to pick my phone from under the bed, I don’t know who it fights at night. I check the charge, as if some ghost was using it overnight. I check what time it is, after which I can go to my email, twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Mostly email has nothing interesting apart from Quora inviting me to read the ‘scariest stories,’ and LinkedIn job notifications that you will never get. I would then scroll twice or so then remember it would have been wiser if I prayed first and set my day in the able hands of Were, God of the eye of the rising sun. Amidst scrolling this morning, I came across a screenshot of a post by Kisumu TV. I later looked for Kisumu Tv and couldn’t find it. Wherever it disappeared to God knows. I don’t enjoy writing sad stories much - but sad stories are also...

Beneath the Rubbles

The earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria was a disturbing news. Have you seen the videos of those tall houses sinking? A fifty floors building just decides to feel weak on its legs and topple? And the human remains beneath the rubbles? What’s even sad is that after all those people perished, Turkey and Syria were yet hit by another 6.4 magnitude earthquake early yesterday.  I’m not a journalist, I’m just a story teller. I’ve been so much interested in Christian Atsu since the earth quake. From the time he was reported missing, to the time he was announced ‘rescued’ and finally to the time he was pronounced dead 12 days later after his body was found decaying under the rubble of his apartment. A father, a husband, a son, a brother, a footballer and most importantly a humanitarian - but also a decaying body. Those who were wiser than us said that when death wants to visit it sends a sign. It knocks and might delay a bit. But when it already made its mind that it will strike. I...

R and R

I don’t like it when a man humbles before me. It rubs up the wrong way, I mean I'm just a man like you mehn. So, we walked back into the restaurant. He was still pleading with us that it was not how we think… but who keeps a customer waiting for close to thirty minutes when you really want their money? They just pass by and don’t even ask ‘what are you taking’ I started feeling like we were in the wrong place. It made me stare down our shoes upwards, perhaps we were not dressed like the rest – in a way that pleased him. That was immaterial, we were classy. Robert reached out to me after he read my previous post, ‘the holy studio.’ He said I could be his next story and I said well I'm that story. He is a good writer, a really good story teller. The voice behind   letstalk . All the Roberts I have known in my lifetime are huge people. I expected an enormous figure, but guess what… Robert is not like other Roberts I know. He is huge ideologically and in thinking and huge in ...

The Holy Studio

I met Philip Mutemi in the streets of wanderlust diaries. He wrote a piece that caused stir and led to a lot of fuss. If you know the wanderlust diaries you're safe. You may actually go to heaven if Christ comes today. His display picture is of a man seated with arms crossed in what looks like a pub. A man probably past middle age. Looking at him another time, I feel like he has four children. Again looking at him, he doesn’t look like in 2014 he was 20 years old, I mean he almost looks older than my father. He honestly couldn’t be 30 right now. All these observations I made because of how some people in the comment section threw stones at him. So, Philip claims that back in 2014 his 3 cousins, 4 neighbours and himself were to join campus. They were given money to go and buy laptops. What is campus life without a laptop? The next Monday early in the morning they were in Nairobi. There was one cousin who was street smart and managed to convince them the he was well acquainted wi...

The Frènch Bible

At times in the homestead, a man should just walk around with a hammer or a pair of pliers. What if you find a loose nail or anything similar ? So my old man saw me walking around with a hammer one evening and called me. Maybe in his head he was like, my son is growing into a responsible man. He then told me, "you know now you're a big person" I mean 'grown up'  I didn't say yes because that's pretty obvious. I'm big. Look at me, I'm  big. I sat on the wooden seat  and his stories came down on me like the walls of Jericho on the 7th day of trumpet blowing.  Boyie, a middle-aged man, back then a CRE teacher at a boys school located in the suburbs of Homa Bay. Many years ago, like in early 80s. A tall chocolate man with a bald head. A reserved man of few words.  Hold on, what age in point of fact defines middle age? I’m yet to see 30 but already feels like I should  be called a middle-aged man. This life has shown me things. In his mid 40s, a famil...

Bamboo Pegs

Last year wasn't a very bad year after all. I lived a colourful life. Colourful and bright like my happy socks. I met amazing people ! In the least, I can confidently say my impact was felt somewhere. I wrote pieces here that may have brightened your days. I visited a Children's home. I took someone on a date. I drank alot of water and a little wine. I played in the Sony Mashinani Rugby tournament and won matches, I have a turf burn on the shoulder to show for it. Could be the reward for the conversion I missed at the 5' mark.  I went to lake Naivasha, I went to Kinoru and got stuck in the middle of the forest at 8pm in the night. I ate cakes, danced in a wedding and woke up early to make certain things work. I flew to Qatar (in my fantasy) and lost the world cup with all my teams. Well, I did things at Twenty four. Things that really, were worth doing.  Twenty four taught me that you don't have to hang your clothes with bamboo pegs for them to dry. You can hang them wi...

on to 25

I promised to wake up and write. I haven’t written in a while, I’ve been dealing with a lot of things. Not to mention losing all my world cup games. Ending a chapter in life not knowing where the next road leads to. I woke up at six, in my pair of shorts and a round hat over my head. Nothing seemed to be coming from my sleeping postu re, I decided to let the cold sting my legs so at least I could think. I started turning my phone and laptop inside out - looking for a writing prompt. Sometimes the mojo goes away. It disappears to God knows where and you can’t think. And even if you think something tells you “that won’t be appealing” Two doorsteps away a padlock is receiving a beating of its life because its owner probably lost the key at the counter of a pub. He is not a bad guy because he beats the padlock while talking to it. He’s amazed how he chose himself a worthy padlock. At the window opposite someone angry from his sleep is peeping to see who on earth speaks to a padlock at 6 ...
